Training in Las Vegas.

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Red Rock Canyon outside Las Vegas, actually.
Interbike was especially hectic for me. Not only was it my 1st time in Vegas -a huge culture shock- it was also Interbike - another full-on sensory overload. Fortunately there was training- my safe haven from the ruckus and all the squalor out there.

A sneak peak at the new Avia trail racing shoe. From the Avia stand at Interbike

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

TaDAA!
This is the Avia trail racing shoe I helped design. Yes, trail RACING shoe. Avia Product Manager Ike Alvear extended the offer and said I could basically build my dream shoe for XTERRA racing. What an honour!

Bike porn from Interbike 2007

The Avia bike drew a lot of attention and explained bike show goers why there’s running shoes at their “bike show”. Triathletes!

Interbike- Last Vegas. Dirt Demo

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

The Dirt Demo takes place in the desert outside Vegas- Bootleg Canyon. The trail system is amazing. Lots of everything- singletrack from mild to quite hairy, jumps, ladders and big drops, a small BMX track and even a huge shuttle for the boinga boinga guys.
I spent the day at the Specialized “village”. Hundreds of [...]

The sweetest bike of all. 2009 Specialized Epic S-works

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

The 2009 Specialized Epic S-works.
The press has hyped the bike up and Susi won the XC World Champs on it, but DANG, I was especially surprised by: a) the suspension and b) the weight. And, yes, it is a really pretty bike.
As you can see in the background, I tested the bike on a not-so-old [...]

Packing like crazy…

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I’m leaving for Interbike in Las Vegas today. And then continue on a 6 week racing trip, (Tahoe, Kona and Maui) and the packing is crazy. It could be snowy in Tahoe and it will be hot in Maui, which means the whole wardrobe has to come.
Fortunately the Italian in Amber is coming [...]

Training camping in the Cascades

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

Amber and I needed to get out of the condo and daily town life, so we headed up the Cascades and camped at the foot of Broken Top. We camped and trained at 2000m, (the same alt as Tahoe- XTERRA USA Champs is in 2 weeks) enjoying the nice weather and the changing colours of [...]

Epic long ride over McKenzie pass, Oregon.

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

Amber and I are in the thick of hectic training for the big races of the year. Yesterday she did a 6hr ride (WHY?!? - see why below) and I did a 4 hr ride with a short hard run off the bike. We met up along her way in Sisters, just outside our home [...]

The 2nd best smoothie ever: Real Orange smoothie

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

This smoothie is amazingly tasty. It doesnt even have ice cream or sugar! Amber dreamed it up early summer. We often have a big glass of ice cold, thick, orange smoothie after training.
Into a blender:
- 4 ripe Oranges. Peeled. Duh
- Soy milk
- 0-2 scoops of French Vanilla Clif Bar protein powder. Depending how [...]

The best soup ever. Butternut soup

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

OK, you waited for it: The number 1 soup in the Caveman’s recipe book.
Just like the broccoli soup, this one is really simple and quick to make. And tasty and healthy, of course. Jan Bekker taught me this one too.

- Butternut. Peel, slice and de-seed a nice, ripe butternut into large pot, 1/2 full (or [...]

The 2nd best soup ever. Broccoli & smoked ham soup

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

I learnt this recipe from master chef and long time house mate Jan Bekker. (Who has defected to Australia recently for “work”)
My prerequisite for a good soup:
- It has to be quick to prepare. (Athletes are always hungry and usually have to eat NOW!)
- It has to be easy to throw together. When you [...]
