Santa Cruz, California (just south of San Fancisco) is wacky, its trendy and its also know as “Surf City”. And the place where Specialized test rides bikes and equipment.
I love ocean swims, and even the supposed 53F water (11C- although it felt warmer) did not put me off.
Last years’ XTERRA Waco winners. Cowboy Caveman and Renata Bucher 1st big win in the USA the Series. Check out last years fun blog here.
What a great sporting community here in Waco, Texas! The people are amazing. Waco is a perfect XTERRA venue. The course is very technical yet fun, its right down town the [...]

MultiSport | March 11, 2010
Poised to dominate the triathlon world in 2010, Specialized has launched its first-ever comprehensive triathlon team, with multiple athletes in each of the three major specialties: Long Course, Short Course, and Xterra. Hand selected by Bobby Behan, Specialized Global Marketing Manager for MTB and Triathlon, the team athletes represent the best [...]
The Lion King “Super Mario” Cipollini was a delight to follow- on the road and in public. His flair for fashion, clothing and glamour bordered on preposterous. It was delicious. But he was a remarkable sprinter who hated climbing and was quoted “If I wasnt a professional cyclist, I would be a porn star.”
But Mario [...]

While training in Bend, OR recently, a few friends got together to shoot a few pics:
I met sports photographer Rich Cruse at my 1st XTERRA- Richmond VA 2001.
Since then we have become close friends, but also we managed to do a lot of business together. He would shoot pics at races and make me look good- not an easy task- and I would offer it to the press and sponsors [...]
Just like at XTERRA Coeur D’Alene and XTERRA Richmond, my friends from Balega (new website) came out to help spread the Balega and Fleet Feet specialty sport store love to the local community.
We usually have a meet and greet at the local Fleet Feet. (Even rhymes!) We smile knowingly when people rave about the best [...]
People always wonder why pros prefer home stays at most races. Why not stay in a “nice hotel” and “rest up for the race?”
There are many reasons why home stay families are the best way of experiencing away from home racing: (in no particular order)
- When you travel as much as we do, you hate [...]
Winning All African ITU title at Club Mykono 1998
Club Mykonons on the West coast of South Africa is 2 hrs north of Cape Town. It used to be a quiet, quaint rip off of the village Mykonos, Greece. The ocean always freezing- the swim was in the marina- for one of the turn buoys you [...]
This video was made for the “triathlon” part of the i-am-specialized website.
The a href=”http://www.i-am-specialized.com/triathlon” target=”_blank”>i-am-specialized website is aimed at being the public’s way of following Specialized riders’ racing and stories online. It is a new site and will mostly aim at internet video content. Internet video is the new TV.
I am honoured to be the [...]
Falke socks is basically the South African version of Balega socks. (USA) Or vice versa?! Anyway, thay are the best out there in terms of quality. Seamless toe boxes, deep heels, 1st class yarn. Cool company too.
Benita De Witt (l) and Jan Hendrik trying to make the Caveman look presentable. (I just got back from a 9hr tyre testing day- hence the cycling kit and stupid tan/dirt line)
Benita de Witt has been my physiotherapist in South Africa for the past 12 years. Since then, I havent had a single sports injury. [...]
A while ago I got this email:

Thanks Nils. Making a sweaty Caveman look good in the Alabama woods takes real talent!
I’m in Darkest Africa at the moment and dont get magazines or follow news on the web. [...]
I just got back on the farm after riding 3 of the 4 days of Sabie Experience. Sabie is only 80km from our farm and when my good friend (and Specialized Factory team damager) Bobby Behan said we were invited to ride, we couldnt say no. Despite still being in the midst of “ice cream [...]
