One of the many great things I got to do while in PE for Ambers Ironman was exploring the South Africa East coast by mountain bike. Actually it was training, (1h30 ride with 8×20second sprints) but I played with the location a bit and what came out was this amazing ride from Schoenmaakerskop [...]

It is my last week on the farm, (before moving to Stellenbosch for serious training) so I’m trying to make the most of the special things I will have to forgo during the racing season.
After my 1h30 long run at 1900m altitude on Sunday, I took the long way home. Via the 2006 Toyota [...]

I’m still on my parents farm near Lydenburg, South Africa, where I spent most of the Southern Hemisphere summer.
Real training started last Monday. My coach Libby Burrell (libbyburrell.blogspot.com) emailed a training program, now there is structure, and less play. Heart rate files are being recorded and emailed with my Suunto t6, logs filled in, [...]

France, 1996.
Triathlon heaven, those years. I was the youngest of a handful of South Africans racing for a village called Cahors. Every weekend we’d travel to races, chasing money, glory and adventure.

My “Knoppebandefiets” The number was the right one all along!
I was a rabid cyclist at the age of 5. It was the year 1979 and it was Christmas.
Santa (my dad minus the Santa costume) wheeled in the most amazing bike I had aver laid eyes upon- in fact, it was a little motorbike. Minus [...]

Always keen to support my meager triathlon income with some cash, I’m trying my hand at growing instant lawn. The field has been fallow for about 6 years (since my dad tried Protea flower farming) so the plowing was quite tough. Had to cut some smallish thorn tress down, roll rocks away and tried to [...]

My XTERRA start:
After racing professional road triathlons for 10 years, and really focusing on the Sydney Olympics in 2000, I decided to try XTERRA triathlons for fun, so in 2001 I came over to the US mainly to race road tris. I was completely unprepared for mountain biking. So for XTERRAs I traveled with my [...]

The Springboks took the Rugby World Cup, so I had pull out all the stops and hit XTERRA Worlds in a big way. The only way- on the top of the podium, lei around the neck, sponsors Pacifico Beer down my throat.

THE FISHING WAS GREAT!!!!
The not so good news was that the race itself was a letdown. Got a slow puncture. Air was leaking through the spoke nipples.
Was feeling strong.
This weekend is Chicago Triathlon. Road stuff.

The Clever Guys at BlackBox Racing (Rockshox R&D) developed this spunky new racing fork. It clocks in at about 150g lighter than the Reba, has 100mm of travel, fat (read “rigid”) stanchions and believe me, it’s as plush as a vintage Lazy Boy.
I cant say too much. Other than there are only 9 forks out [...]
