XTERRA West- Las Vegas video

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Yes, that is me crashing (only a small one) at 3.00.
Earlier in the race  I was quite rattled after losing the chain and bending it. I thought my race was over, but I bent it back (about 90 degrees!) and it worked perfectly. I could see Josiah charging from behind, and with my mind all [...]

The making of a video. For www.i-am-specialized.com

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

This video was made for the “triathlon” part of the i-am-specialized website.
The a href=”http://www.i-am-specialized.com/triathlon” target=”_blank”>i-am-specialized website is aimed at being the public’s way of following Specialized riders’ racing and stories online. It is a new site and will mostly aim at internet video content. Internet video is the new TV.
I am honoured to be the [...]

Viva Las Vegas!
Pic by Rich Cruse . Check out more race pics on Rich’s Twitter.
I had a good season opener, despite a few hic- ups on the bike. (a small crash and a twisted chain)
Josiah Middaugh from Colorado had a 1.15 lead after a phenomenal bike, but to my surprise I slowly reeled him in [...]

29er Mania… Found this XTERRA South Africa (Grabouw) pic of beloved Specialized Stumpjumper 29er

XTERRA South Africa
If you dont know it yet, I LOVE 29ers!   (29er = Big wheels)
- Handles rocky, sandy, bumpy terrain better than 26inch.
-Larger contact patch= better traction.
- More comfortable.
- Better rolling.
- Keeps momentum.
Sure, the bike weighs a bit more, but we’re* working on it…

My dad, (also 6ft3) has this saying- “A good [...]

A fun weekend’s dirt bike riding!

Monday, March 16th, 2009

I built a short Enduro track through a stream and some dongas on our farm. My mate Werner came over for the day and we rode till dark. Serious fun and hard work!  I finished my long run 1st thing in the morning and had the day free for fun “XTERRA training”…
This was my last [...]

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

For those who dont read Afrikaans so well- shame on you! Just kidding. It says here: Gert Stoltz won the Grand Masters (60+) agegroup at the recent 40km Sabie Classic mountain bike race. He beat the 2nd placed guy by 6 minutes!
Obviously he rides the fastest bike out there, (one of my old S works [...]

York Timbers Sabie Experience mountain bike race. 2008

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

I just got back on the farm after riding 3 of the 4 days of Sabie Experience. Sabie is only 80km from our farm and when my good friend (and Specialized Factory team damager) Bobby Behan said we were invited to ride, we couldnt say no. Despite still being in the midst of “ice cream [...]

Enduro racing: Great off season XTERRA training!

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

We started in groups of 4. I’m on the red and black Honda. (Yes, the guy in the back!) The guy next to me on the far right, Willie “die Lem” (The Blade) won, and I finished 2nd. The guy on his back wheel crashed about half way through while in 2nd. He had a [...]

Fun flying memories from earlier this year.

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

I know “fun” and “flying” is an oxymoron nowadays, but this was the best flight of the year. My flight from Kona to Maui. Andrew the pilot is trying to squeeze 1x XL Specialized bike box and 1x XL Tri All 3 Double case into those small little bins under the belly of this “plane”. [...]

The Running Event: The Suunto Story

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

The Suunto booth was just a few spaces from the Balega booth. As I went over to say “hi” I was pleasanty surprised by this poster they had. Larger then life. It was taken at XTERRA Snow Valley in CA, where I raced with my new limited edition, customized Suunto t6 Red Arrow. The one [...]

The Running Event. The Avia story: Avia AVI STOLTZ

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Behold the new Avia AVI STOLTZ!
I’m super excited. The moment I got the shoes I test ran them into the Dallas sunset. As I stood there on the levee, I marveled at the full moon rising over the skyscrapers of downtown Dallas and I realized: “This is my proudest moment of the year.” “This shoe, [...]

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Ciao Luca!
My friend Luca Molteni from Italy clowning around and then emailing this fun photo. Otherwise I would never have seen this poster. (or Luca swinging like a monkey)
I met Luca in racing XTERRA in Europe and he placed 7th in his age group at Worlds in Maui. The great thing about XTERRA is the [...]
