Heartbreak Hill- early in the bike and I just got away from the group and lava everywhere. Photo Nils Nilsen

My legs got better the further I went, the downhills it was a free for all- I didnt even fall almost once! Photo by Guillaume Gros

For the uninformed, I flatted with 4mi to go with a 2.30 to 3min lead. Soon the tube flatted too, and I rode the rim home- 5k over lava rock. Finished 12th

The leanest I have ever been. Custom Avia shoes, South African flag race kit and familiar #1.

Amber and I in 2 pieces. Or 1 piece each. She had some lava rock dug out of her fore arm and elbow from bike crash when another athlete clipped her front wheel while overtaking.

    Conrad,
Do you think the World Champs should be held elsewhere? It seems as if the race is always so luck based. You flatted as did Dan Hugo. You men were slaughtering it and a few unfortunate flats took you out of contention for the top spots. MTB racing isn’t like road tri’s as you know. You have ZERO support crews and I hate that the most important day in Xterra can be lost because of chance and not talent.

What are your thoughts? You can’t logically carry around three tubes and five CO2 canisters on your bike so how can chance be removed from the equation? The best deserve to succeed and I feel that the best have lost out too many times at the Xterra World Champs.
