Reunion, with its distinctly French flavor, is also Adventure Paradise! <strong>A perfect home for XTERRA:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/index.php\/xterra-reunion-adventure-paradise\/screen-shot-2016-04-16-at-11-41-16-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6073\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6073 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-16-at-11.41.16-AM-660x371.png\" alt=\"Conrad Stoltz XTERRA Reunion family swim\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-16-at-11.41.16-AM-660x371.png 660w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-16-at-11.41.16-AM-400x225.png 400w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-16-at-11.41.16-AM-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-04-16-at-11.41.16-AM.png 1366w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tropical climate with palm trees, warm water, corral teeming with colourful fish, but <a style=\"text-decoration: none; font-weight:normal; color: #444\" href = \"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/index.php\/generic-levitra-online\/\">also<\/a> plenty of lava rocks, leg bursting climbs, scenic views, technical single track, river crossings, beach sand and of course a very enthusiastic local triathlon community!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having gleaned the above tidbits from South Africans who raced there last year -and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/xterrareunion\/\">XTERRA Reunion FB photos<\/a>, I knew <strong><em>this<\/em> was going to be my first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xterraplanet.com\/\">XTERRA<\/a> since my retirement from <!--more-->professional racing last September.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To many people<strong> \u201cretirement\u201d<\/strong> means sitting on the couch. To me it means \u201c<strong>not making a living by winning races anymore, but still maintaining my love for the sport, adventure, travel, adrenaline, a healthy lifestyle and family fun.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Since my \u201cretirement\u201d Liezel and I spent most of our time starting up and working at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CavemanCafebyStoltz\/?fref=ts\">Caveman Caf\u00e9<\/a> in Stellenbosch. That, along with a very, very busy 11 month old Zena, I didn\u2019t get much time to train at all. Fortunately I have forgone all high performance racing aspirations and now just aspire to \u201chave fun\u201d and fit into my \u201cold\u201d race kit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/index.php\/xterra-reunion-adventure-paradise\/img_8746\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6102\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_8746.jpg\" alt=\"Conrad Stoltz Xterra Reunion un-retiring\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_8746.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_8746-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But first, I had to steal my old race kit out of its display frame at Caveman Cafe&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The reputation of a great race travels fast, so not surprisingly the field was stacked with the fast, the hardcore and the \u201clifestyle racers\u201d- which I think is my newfound category\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/index.php\/xterra-reunion-adventure-paradise\/img_9965-1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6118\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6118\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_9965-1.jpg\" alt=\"Conrad Stoltz Xterra Reunion Yeray Luxem, Ruben Ruzafa, Sandra Kolbemeuller, Francois Carloni\" width=\"597\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_9965-1.jpg 597w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/IMG_9965-1-400x266.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reuniting with &#8220;old&#8221; friends from the XTERRA circuit: French powerhouse Francois Carloni, 3x World Champ Ruben Ruzafa from Spain,\u00a0 Sandra Kolbemeuller (AUT) and Yeray Luxem from Belgium.<\/p>\n<p>The South Africans came out in full force, 11 in all with the professional contingent being <a href=\"https:\/\/theoblignaut.wordpress.com\/\">Theo Blignaut<\/a>, Antoine van Heerden, Aidan Nugent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/carla.germishuys\">Carla van Huyssteen<\/a>, Susan Sloan, and youngster Natia van Heerden.<\/p>\n<p>So with our bikes racked amongst the palm trees and our toes in the 27Deg C Indian ocean, this idyllic triathlon kicked off at the humane hour of 8am. Which is partly explains why I started the bike with the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> lady\u2026 The other reason is: I couldn\u2019t stop staring at the tropical fish and colourful coral at arms reach. Flat &amp; fast through the palm trees to warm up before tackling the main climb towards the volcano. Once you hit the trails, it becomes distinctly rocky and thorny!<\/p>\n<p>For those not familiar with XTERRA \u2013 the relatively tame distances of 1.5km swim, 30km mountain bike and 10km trail run, may seem like a bit of a cake walk- albeit a dusty one\u2026 You are mistaken!<\/p>\n<p>A pro level road triathlete doing a typical road triathlon will do a 30km road ride in about 40minutes and the 10km road run in about 31minutes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/index.php\/xterra-reunion-adventure-paradise\/13063061_2012405475650811_257053036483308896_o\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6100\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/13063061_2012405475650811_257053036483308896_o.jpg\" alt=\"Conrad Stoltz Xterra Reunion vtt\" width=\"660\" height=\"397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/13063061_2012405475650811_257053036483308896_o.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/13063061_2012405475650811_257053036483308896_o-400x241.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But on this typical XTERRA course, the fastest time for the 30km cycle leg was 1h12 (Ruzafa), the fastest lady 1h25, (Van Huyssteen) and many of the age groupers riding about 2h30.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/index.php\/xterra-reunion-adventure-paradise\/screen-shot-2016-08-23-at-8-03-13-am\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6109\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Screen-Shot-2016-08-23-at-8.03.13-AM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2016-08-23 at 8.03.13 AM\" width=\"792\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Screen-Shot-2016-08-23-at-8.03.13-AM.png 792w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Screen-Shot-2016-08-23-at-8.03.13-AM-400x268.png 400w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Screen-Shot-2016-08-23-at-8.03.13-AM-768x515.png 768w, https:\/\/www.conradstoltz.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Screen-Shot-2016-08-23-at-8.03.13-AM-660x443.png 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nice single track sections awaited the connoisseurs &#8211; like myself &#8211; here riding my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.specialized-stellenbosch.com\/products\/sj-fsr-expert-carbon-6fattie?variant=11029184836\">Stumpjumper 6Fattie<\/a> trail bike with 3inch tyres &#8220;unflated&#8221; The run had a few short pleasant beach sections interspersed with hectic boulder hopping, a twisty savannah section right on the edge of the ocean, a waist deep river crossing, a spooky forest where you had to contort yourself and climb through vines and over rocks. Certainly the most pleasant big climb I\u2019ve ever done. Firstly because it was quite technical and there was no defined trail, so as long as you followed the arrows, you could pick your own way over and around impressive black lava rock formations.<\/p>\n<p>The other reason I loved it: Whenever I got that old familiar feeling of my <strong>muscles are on fire<\/strong> with <strong>lactic acid<\/strong>, and whole body feels like a <strong>overheated radiator<\/strong> about to boil over,<strong> vision blurry<\/strong> and flashes of black&#8230;<strong> I happily walked.<\/strong> Something I really appreciate about this new<strong> racing for fun<\/strong> thing!<\/p>\n<p>Since a little boy I enjoyed pushing myself to the very edge in racing \u2013 physically, technically and mentally.
