10 Questions with TriathlonTeam.org team mate, Aleksandar Sorensen

Danish triathlete, Aleksandar Sørensen-Markovic is racing Ironman Wisconsin this weekend.

I got hold of him a few weeks ago and did the “10 Questions with…”

For starters, and the reader’s benefit, write a short paragraph about yourself:

I began triathlon back in 2002 to loose some weight. I was fascinated by the lifestyle and have always like to train.

I  do Ironman triathlon because I had never tried to swim prior to beginning with triathlon.

I am very easy going and am in triathlon for the lifestyle. I love to compete but it’s the training every day that I really love. The races are also nice but mostly I just love being a part of triathlon. I have met some cool people and enjoy my life as a coach and athlete now.

How you feel about your season so far?

It has been good with training but my results have not been what I would have liked.
I have struggled the last two years to find the fitness I have had but this year I have seen a new level in training and am enjoying the sport more than ever. Hopefully I can get some results to show for the improvements in training.

1 ) Your favourite sporting memory?

When I got a call from the danish youth national coach to let me know I had made the cut for the Nordic Open in Basket ball.

Besides this it was when Denmark won the European championships in soccer in 1992. I got my first kiss and they won..I still credit the kiss to the victory..everyone went crazy and for days Denmark was one big party. I was too young to party but was up until very late (I hope my mom doesn’t read this because the I will be in trouble).

2 ) Your biggest/ most memorable training day?

I don’t know. Any ride or run that ends with cakes is great. I like to train with people who like to jerk around a bit in training. I like a good laugh. It makes training fun and keeps me motivated to get out of the door.

3 ) Who will win Kona this year?

For male I would say Conrad Stoltz 😉 If not then I hope Rasmus Henning!

For the woman I think Rebekka Keat (mostly because saying Chrissie Wellington is too predictable )

4 ) When racing, what do you think about when it is crunch time?

That I hope I don’t mess up:) No I don’t really think. I have noticed the more I think the more likely I am to mess up..this also goes for other aspects of life.

5 ) The holidays got the better of you and all of a sudden the scale is telling an unhappy tale. How do you get rid of your blubber?

That happened to me this year. I lost 5 kg over the summer and am now lean and mean at 61 kg. I just eat a bit less.

I make sure to eat enough so I can train and am not tired but am just cutting a little bit out each day. I think doing it slow is best..At the most a kg a week. I rather race a few kg heavy than to be lean but have not trained.

6 ) If you had to train to only 1 song for the rest of the year, which one would it be?

I would say it should be my favorite hip hop duo Dj Static & Nat Ill feat. Swedish off the wall super rapper Promoe. “Get up, get out” Watch it here.

7 ) Send a picture of an earthly belonging that makes you happy.

christiania

There is a part of Copenhagen that makes me happy – Christiania-[Check it out- its a really interesting little “free country” -C]

Christiania is a part of Copenhagen that was not really a part of the danish society..sadly it’s becoming normalized and if things go really wrong it will become just like the rest of Copenhagen.

However it still makes me happy that there is a place so different where people that have chosen to live a different life can live. That is more or less what freedom means to me and if you can’t have that in a society like the danish then it would be very very sad!!

8 ) Tell us a funny/weird travel story.

I was arrested in Mexico..I never really found out why but it was weird for sure. I wish I could tell more about this but I really did not understand a thing but for sure it was the most weird thing I have experienced.

[Did you maybe pee in the street? I got “arrested” in Cancun for peeing in the street. In the back of the cop car I met one of my triathlon heros from way back – Andy McNaughton, already negotiating our bribe! Conrad]

9 ) The worst place you have ever slept?

My apartment in Copenhagen!- just kidding!

Worst place is the metro train in Copenhagen. I woke up around 11 a.m when a guy came to control tickets. I had none and got a 100 euro fee + a super sore back. The seats in those trains are really bad for sleeping.

I don’t really know what happened that night bu am sure it was because of something I had eaten. I have food allergy!!

10 ) What do you say we get together for a Fernet Branca some day? Oh, what is a Fernet Branca?

Fernet Branca the Italian licquor that actually made me begin triathlon. After a hard day out I was 86 kg – 25 more than now and decided something needed to change..I have not had it since but how about some carperinias?
