Monster Burger Eat and Run World Champs -flashback from 2005

Conrad Stoltz Matt Lieto burger eating contest

Caveman & Matt Lieto tackles the 1st leg of the World Monster Burger Eat and Run Champs

Pilot Butte Restaurant, Bend, Oregon, 2005

Each contestant has 30 minutes to eat:

1) The 18oz Pilot Butte Burger. (with all toppings) For the Civilized World – 18oz means 510.34873grams. That’s just the meat patty!
2) Medium fries
3) Large milkshake of your choice.

30 minutes after the start of the Eating Challenge, the Hill Run takes place. (From Pilot Butte Restaurant to top of Pilot Butte)

First on top of the Butte with all of the above mentioned items intact, wins. (This rule will be changed for next years contest, as we feel that a strong eating leg was disadvantaged by the old ruling)

Despite large amounts of trash talking, boasting, and eating technique research, only 5 contestants were man enough to face up to the enormous task at hand. (2 Triathletes and 3 Cross country skiers.) A sizable crowd of spectators, press, coaches, wannabees and groupies filled the ringside seats.

Ironman Matt Lieto “The Human Vacuum Cleaner” devoured his scrumptious meal in 15 minutes flat- a new World Record! I finished the eating leg in 2nd, a full 6 minutes off the pace, and Bill, the only other contestant to finish within the cutoff, scraped in just under 30 min.

At exactly 30min, the running race started. Conveniently located at the foot of Pilot Butte – a towering lava cone with a steep concrete road winding to the top. We lined up, grunting, shuffling, with bellies bulging to the start line. First to the top becomes the World Monster Burger Eat and Run Champion.

Rule 1: If you throw up, you’re DQed.

Rule 2: If you throw up again, you’re back in.

The cannon boomed (actually someone said “GO”) and I took off sprinting as fast as I could. I figured a flat out sprint would be so ridiculous, they would think that’s may “race pace” and thus would blow their minds. It worked. Matt Lieto clung on for a while, but my superior Food Carrying Capacity/VAM ability clearly blew them out of the pond, and sweet victory was mine.

Special thanks to Paul Lieto from Trifuel.com.

Keep dreaming.
